Dr. David A. Ackerman, DVM
Dr. Ackerman graduated from Virgina Tech in Blacksburg, Virgina with a B.S. Degree in Biochemistry and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1989. He became owner and operator of Andrews Veterinary Hospital on June 4, 1993. Dr. Ackerman serves as an elected official on the Cherokee County Board of Education. He works with several animal based nonprofit organizations and strives to improve the well-being of his community.

Veterinary neurology and orthopedics are his passions; however, he involves himself wholeheartedly in all aspects of veterinary medicine. Dr. Ackerman is willing to take on the day to day care as well as the most challenging cases to improve your pet's health.

Dr. Ackerman lives in Andrews with his wife, Alison and their two sons, Rob and Chris. Alison is the office manger, and works the reception desk when needed. Andrews Veterinary Hospital is a true family business.

Dr. Ackerman raises Katahdin sheep and Geocaches as a hobby. The Ackerman family are outdoor enthusiasts and are heavily involved in the community. Dr. Ackerman and Alison have five dogs: Simba, Stryder, Arwen, Maggie, and Annie. Maggie and Annie are the keepers of the sheep and work hard every day to protect their flock.


Dr. Amanda Buchanan-Gambill, DVM
Dr. Gambill graduated from Western Carolina University with a degree in Biology. She then worked with the Great Smoky Mountain National Park on the elk project. She graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2011. AVH is proud and delighted to have her in its employ.

Dr. Gambill first worked at Andrews Veterinary Hospital as a student in high school, where she played basketball. She still follows basketball with the Duke Blue Devils. Her husband, Andy, teaches at Western Carolina University. She has an African Tortoise with an elaborate home and a few pugs. They make their home in Andrews.

Dr. Larry J. Ackerman, VMD
Dr. Ackerman graduated in 1959 Pre-Med, Zoology-Chemistry at Mount Saint Mary's College in Maryland, received his VMD in 1963 at the University of Pennsylvania, M.S. Degree Veterinary Pathology at the University of Missouri, 1968, and in 1970 became certified at the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.

Dr. Ackerman has studied and practiced veterinary medicine all over the United States, as well as in Panama. He is retired U.S. Army. Dr. Ackerman served as Assistant Chief for five years and five years as Chief of Veterinary Pathology Divisions in the U.S. Army Research Laboratories. Dr. Ackerman has been published 32 separate times.

Dr. Ackerman joined his son in practice at Andrews Veterinary Hospital in 1998. He works in the hospital a few days a week. He treats all of our patients and specializes in "pocket creatures", such as ferrets, rodents, and rabbits.

Dr. Ackerman lives in Andrews. His hobbies are making stained glass art and U.S. Stamp collecting. He enjoys taking Daisy, his 13 year old Lhasa Apso on car rides and walks. Last, but not least, he loves Vizslas.
