Rats

When purchasing a rat give he or she a good physical check.
Some of things you can do is run your hands over the rat
feeling for lumps, bumps, and scabs.  If the rat has any of the
above mentioned, he or she is probably unhealthy.  Also look
for a rough coat and cloudy eyes.

If you have other rats we recommend keeping your new rat
separated for approximately  two weeks.  Rats can transmit
upper respiratory infections to each other.

You can trim your rats nails with human nail clippers.  Just trim
the sharp tips back, making sure not to cut their quicks.  If you
feel uncomfortable doing so, bring he or she in and we will do
it for you.

Andrews Veterinary Hospital does spay and neuter rats.
Rabbits

We recommend rabbits have annual exams and dental check-
ups.

Chewing is a natural behavior for rabbits.  Provide your rabbit
with a block of wood or rabbit safe chew toys.  Rabbits need
to chew in order to keep their teeth filed down so they can eat
properly.  Andrews Veterinary Hospital does trim rabbit teeth
and nails.

Reptiles

Andrews Veterinary Hospital does see reptiles, including
snakes, lizards, and turtles.

One of the basic health problems with snakes and lizards are
parasites and mites.  It is a good idea when acquiring a new
pet to have it checked for good health.  We  recommend
keeping new reptiles separated from other reptiles you may
have until you can get a clean bill of health.  Mites are highly
contagious to your other reptiles.

Your snake may be ill if he or she begins loosing weight, has
runny stools, refusing eat, and or staring upward for long
periods on time.
